At that solemn moment, his disciples humbly prayed to him:
“Master, please give us the essence of all spiritual disciplines in a concise form, so that we may practice them meticulously throughout our lives and attain liberation.”
Moved by compassion, ลaแน karฤcฤrya condensed the essence of the entire spiritual path into forty practical instructions arranged in five verses. These instructions collectively became known as Sฤdhana Paรฑcakam — “The Five Verses on Spiritual Discipline.”
Thus, this short work is traditionally regarded as ลaแน karฤcฤrya’s final spiritual roadmap for earnest seekers.

In Advaita, devotion and knowledge are complementary.Bhakti softens the heart and dissolves egoism.

ลaแน karฤcฤrya deliberately uses a striking expression. Hunger is compared to a disease not because the body is condemned, but to cultivate right perspective toward food and sense enjoyment.Just as medicine is taken:in proper quantity,at the proper time,without emotional obsession,food too should be taken primarily for sustaining the body as an instrument of dharma and sฤdhanฤ. Most human beings gradually become psychologically dependent upon sensory gratification, especially taste. The tongue becomes one of the strongest gateways of attachment. Therefore the seeker is advised to cultivate moderation and mastery rather than indulgence.

The expression เคญिเค्เคทौเคทเคงเคฎ् is profoundly meaningful:เคญिเค्เคทा — alms, whatever comes naturally,เคเคทเคงเคฎ् — medicine.The instruction implies:accept food with gratitude,avoid excessive preference and demand,eat with simplicity and awareness,avoid making food a source of psychological excitement.The body is to be maintained, not worshipped through indulgence.This attitude gradually reduces:greed,restlessness,dependency,sensory slavery.It also cultivates contentment and inner freedom.

Even after gaining spiritual insight, one must remain vigilant not to recreate bondage through egoistic action and attachment.Actions performed with:ego,possessiveness,desire,doership,generate future bondage.But actions performed in Knowledge, without egoistic identification, do not bind.This is the culmination of Karma Yoga.The realized seeker understands:“I am not the doer; actions belong to body and mind functioning within Prakแนti.”Thus future karmic accumulation ceases.

Even after realization, the present body-mind continues due to previously fructified karma, just as:an arrow already released continues its course,a potter’s wheel continues rotating briefly after the impulse stops.The jรฑฤnฤซ therefore allows life to unfold naturally without resistance or attachment.Pleasure and pain may arise at the bodily or mental level, but the realized one remains inwardly free as the witnessing Consciousness.He neither complains against destiny nor anxiously clings to experience.This is true acceptance born not of helplessness, but of wisdom.
เค เคฅ เคชเคฐเคฌ्เคฐเคน्เคฎाเคค्เคฎเคจा เคธ्เคฅीเคฏเคคाเคฎ् — Thereafter abide as the Supreme Brahman
This is the final culmination of all spiritual discipline.After purification, inquiry, meditation, and dissolution of ignorance, the seeker abides firmly in the knowledge:I am not the finite individual,I am not bound,I am pure Existence-Consciousness-Bliss,I am Brahman itself.This abidance is liberation while living (jฤซvanmukti).The spiritual journey that began with discipline and self-control culminates in effortless freedom and fullness.
