At that solemn moment, his disciples humbly prayed to him:

Master, please give us the essence of all spiritual disciplines in a concise form, so that we may practice them meticulously throughout our lives and attain liberation.”

Moved by compassion, ลšaแน…karฤcฤrya condensed the essence of the entire spiritual path into forty practical instructions arranged in five verses. These instructions collectively became known as Sฤdhana Paรฑcakam — “The Five Verses on Spiritual Discipline.”

Thus, this short work is traditionally regarded as ลšaแน…karฤcฤrya’s final spiritual roadmap for earnest seekers.

It is not merely a hymn to be recited, but a complete guide to inner transformation.

The first verse lays the foundation of spiritual life.

The mind naturally flows outward toward the world. Scriptural study redirects it toward Truth.Daily exposure to Vedฤnta:purifies thinking,refines intellect,awakens discrimination,strengthens spiritual aspiration.For ลšaแน…kara, the purpose of scriptural study is not scholarship alone, but Self-knowledge.

Vedฤnta does not advocate irresponsibility.One must perform one’s duties:honestly,selflessly,diligently.The Bhagavad Gฤซtฤ teaches:เคธ्เคตเคงเคฐ्เคฎे เคจिเคงเคจं เคถ्เคฐेเคฏः । Duty performed in the proper spirit purifies the ego.

Association shapes consciousness.Satsanga uplifts:thoughts,values,aspirations,conduct.The company of the wise accelerates inner growth.

เคญเค—เคตเคคो เคญเค•्เคคिเคฐ्เคฆृเคขाเคงीเคฏเคคाเคฎ् — Strengthen devotion

In Advaita, devotion and knowledge are complementary.Bhakti softens the heart and dissolves egoism.

The root ignorance is:“I am the body.”Vedฤnta reveals:“I am pure Awareness.”

Truth is realized in silence and contemplation, not intellectual victory.

เค•्เคทुเคฆ्เคต्เคฏाเคงिเคถ्เคš เคšिเค•िเคค्เคธ्เคฏเคคाเคฎ् — Treat hunger as a disease

ลšaแน…karฤcฤrya deliberately uses a striking expression. Hunger is compared to a disease not because the body is condemned, but to cultivate right perspective toward food and sense enjoyment.Just as medicine is taken:in proper quantity,at the proper time,without emotional obsession,food too should be taken primarily for sustaining the body as an instrument of dharma and sฤdhanฤ. Most human beings gradually become psychologically dependent upon sensory gratification, especially taste. The tongue becomes one of the strongest gateways of attachment. Therefore the seeker is advised to cultivate moderation and mastery rather than indulgence.

เคช्เคฐเคคिเคฆिเคจं เคญिเค•्เคทौเคทเคงं เคญुเคœ्เคฏเคคाเคฎ् — Consume food like medicine received in alms

The expression เคญिเค•्เคทौเคทเคงเคฎ् is profoundly meaningful:เคญिเค•्เคทा — alms, whatever comes naturally,เค”เคทเคงเคฎ् — medicine.The instruction implies:accept food with gratitude,avoid excessive preference and demand,eat with simplicity and awareness,avoid making food a source of psychological excitement.The body is to be maintained, not worshipped through indulgence.This attitude gradually reduces:greed,restlessness,dependency,sensory slavery.It also cultivates contentment and inner freedom.

เคธ्เคตाเคฆ्เคตเคจ्เคจं เคจ เคคु เคฏाเคš्เคฏเคคाเคฎ् — Do not crave luxurious or tasty food

ลšaแน…karฤcฤrya does not prohibit pleasant food absolutely; rather, he warns against craving and insistence.The problem lies not in taste, but in mental dependence upon taste.When the mind constantly seeks sensory stimulation, it becomes:extroverted,agitated,desire-driven.A seeker should cultivate the ability to remain inwardly peaceful regardless of external comforts.In modern life, where food often becomes:entertainment,emotional compensation,social prestige,compulsive indulgence,this instruction becomes especially relevant.Moderation in food contributes greatly to:health,mental clarity,emotional balance,meditative steadiness.The Bhagavad Gฤซtฤ therefore teaches:เคฏुเค•्เคคाเคนाเคฐเคตिเคนाเคฐเคธ्เคฏ เคฏुเค•्เคคเคšेเคท्เคŸเคธ्เคฏ เค•เคฐ्เคฎเคธु ।เคฏुเค•्เคคเคธ्เคตเคช्เคจाเคตเคฌोเคงเคธ्เคฏ เคฏोเค—ो เคญเคตเคคि เคฆुःเค–เคนा ॥ เฅฌ.เฅงเฅญ ॥“For one who is moderate in food, recreation, action, sleep, and wakefulness, Yoga becomes the destroyer of sorrow.”

Thus, these simple instructions on food are actually profound teachings on self-mastery and freedom from dependence upon sensory pleasure.

Contentment quietens craving and stabilizes the mind.เคธंเคคोเคทः เคชเคฐเคฎं เคธुเค–เคฎ् ।

Spiritual life requires resilience.Pleasure and pain must be faced with equanimity.

เคจ เคคु เคตृเคฅा เคตाเค•्เคฏं เคธเคฎुเคš्เคšाเคฐ्เคฏเคคाเคฎ् — Avoid useless speech

Excessive talking dissipates mental energy.Silence deepens awareness.

The seeker gradually becomes inwardly free from emotional dependence.

One should neither seek constant approval nor become insensitive toward others.

This final verse culminates in liberation.

In Vedฤnta, karmas are traditionally classified into:

Through Self-knowledge, the ignorance that sustains karmic bondage is destroyed. Just as darkness disappears instantly upon the rise of light, accumulated karmas lose their binding force through the dawn of Knowledge.

The Muแน‡แธaka Upaniแนฃad declares:
