That Thou Art
Realize the majesty, splendor, and boundless power of the Self that stands behind your mind, thoughts, will, and memory. Contemplate the glory and immortal nature of that hidden, all-pervading, indwelling Essence.
Know with conviction that this Self is the inexhaustible source of knowledge, bliss, strength, beauty, peace, and joy. Feel deeply that the sun, moon, and stars move in harmony by Its command. The air blows, rain descends, fire burns, rivers flow, and the sun shines through Its silent sovereignty.
You are the glory of glories, the sun of suns, the light of lights, the holiest of the holy, the God of gods, the emperor of emperors.
You are Truth. You are Brahman.
Swami Sivananda
เคคเคค्เคค्เคตเคฎเคธि —“That Thou Art.”
— Chandogya Upanishad
1. “Self at the back of mind” — The Witness Consciousness
When he says the Self is “at the back of your mind,” it refers to the Sฤkแนฃฤซ (Witness Consciousness) — that which illumines:
- Mind (manas)
- Intellect (buddhi)
- Memory (chitta)
- Ego (ahankฤra)
It is not a thought, but that because of which thoughts are known.
As the Gita says:
เค्เคทेเคค्เคฐเค्เคं เคाเคชि เคฎां เคตिเคฆ्เคงि .....
— Bhagavad Gita 13.2
“Know Me as the Knower of the field.”
2. “Interpenetrating, indwelling Essence” — All-pervading Brahman
The Self is not confined to the body. It is:
- Hidden (not objectifiable)
- Interpenetrating (sarvavyฤpฤซ)
- Indwelling (antaryฤmin)
Like space pervading all pots, Consciousness pervades all beings.
3. “Sun, moon and stars move by your command” — Not Ego, but Identity
This is not an encouragement of egoic inflation.
It means:
The same Consciousness that shines as your awareness
Is the same Consciousness that governs the cosmos.
The Upanishadic declaration:
เคธเคฐ्เคตं เคเคฒ्เคตिเคฆं เคฌ्เคฐเคน्เคฎ....
“All this indeed is Brahman.”
Thus, when individuality dissolves, one recognizes:There is no “other.”
4. “Thou art Brahman” — Dissolution of Limitation
This is the climax of Advaita:
- You are not the body.
- You are not the mind.
- You are not the doer.
- You are Pure Consciousness.
As declared:
เค เคนं เคฌ्เคฐเคน्เคฎाเคธ्เคฎि ....
“I am Brahman.”
— Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
Such exalted affirmations must be understood properly.
If grasped by the ego → it becomes spiritual arrogance.
If understood through discrimination → it becomes liberation.
The “Thou” here is not the personality.
It is the limitless Awareness in which personality appears.
Swami Sivananda is urging us to shift identity:
From finite individual (jฤซva)
To
Infinite Consciousness (Brahman)
