Adi Sankaracarya’s Radical Truth — The Aloneness of the Self

This is not a comforting teaching — it is a dismantling. It strikes at the very foundation upon which human life is ordinarily constructed: the belief that “I belong to someone”, “someone belongs to me”, and “I am incomplete without another.”

Advaita Vedanta, as unfolded by Adi Sankaracarya, does not console this belief — it exposes it.

Human life revolves around identification:

“my family”

“my partner”

“my status”

“my identity”

Yet, upon inquiry, none of these withstand scrutiny.

Sankaracarya points out that all relationships belong to the realm of the body and mind — both of which are transient.

The impermanence of worldly association is forcefully expressed:

There is no mother, no father, no relative, no brother;no wealth, no home — therefore, awaken, awaken!

This is not a denial at the empirical level, but a revelation at the absolute level (paramarthika satya).

The Self (ฤ€tman) is ever free, ever complete, and ever unattached. It does not enter into relationships — it merely illumines them.

The Atma Bodha clarifies this through discrimination:

This Self is unattached.

And the Upaniแนฃadic vision echoes the same truth:

The One Self, hidden in all beings, pervades everything as the inner Self.

Thus, what appears as many relationships is, in reality, the play of one Consciousness.

When this truth is merely intellectual, life continues as before. But when it is seen directly, something fundamental shifts. The illusion of psychological dependence collapses. The need to derive identity from others dissolves. The fear of loss weakens.

What “breaks” is not the heart — but the false center of identification (ahankara).

The Bhagavad Gita describes this state:

One who is unattached everywhere, who neither rejoices nor hates upon encountering good or evil —his wisdom is firmly established.

Nothing is Truly “Yours”. Even the identity one fiercely defends is a construct. Body changes. Mind fluctuates. Roles come and go.

What remains unchanged?

That witnessing awareness — the true Self. Sankaracarya uncompromising declaration:

Brahman alone is real, the world is mithyฤ (dependent reality), the individual self is none other than Brahman.

Thus, the idea “I am this person, related to these people” is part of the superimposed illusion (adhyasa).

Aloneness or All-Oneness?

At first glance, this teaching feels like utter aloneness. But in truth, it is not loneliness — it is all-oneness.

You are not separate and alone —you are the only reality appearing as all.

The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad declares:

There is no multiplicity here whatsoever.

Liberation (mokแนฃa) is not a product to be attained. It is the recognition of what already is.

Not by gaining something new —but by seeing clearly that there was never anything to hold on to.

— Katha Upanishad

When all desires lodged in the heart fall away, the mortal becomes immortal — here itself he attains Brahman.

To Conclude

Most will pass over this teaching — it is too stark. Some will feel discomfort — because it shakes deeply held assumptions.

A rare few will recognize its truth —and in that recognition, discover freedom.

  • What falls away is dependence.
  • What remains is pure Being.
  • Not isolated.
  • Not incomplete.
  • But whole, infinite, and ever free.

It is a brief but precious moment in the vast expanse of existence, meant for awakening to the truth of pure consciousness. Yet, the very instruments intended to illuminate this truth—the mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), and inner awareness (antahkarana)—are delicate and prone to distortion. Classical Indian philosophy identifies four fundamental defects that cloud understanding and perpetuate bondage: Bhrama (Delusion), Pramada (Heedlessness), Vipralipsa (Deceit), and Karnapaแนญava (Inattention in Hearing). These are not mere abstract concepts; they are living tendencies that shape perception, judgment, and moral orientation. To recognize and remove them is to polish the mirror of the mind, allowing it to reflect the effulgence of the Self (Atman). The...

These examinations are governed by detailed procedures designed to uphold transparency, accuracy, and professional integrity. Any deviation from these standards not only compromises the legitimacy of the recruitment process but also exposes the system to allegations of malpractice and weakens public trust. This case study concerns a complaint lodged by a selected candidate for the post of Operator-cum-Technician (OCT) in an integrated steel plant. The candidate alleged that he was declared “temporarily unfit” during the pre-employment medical examination because he refused to pay a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, demanded by the examining doctors. A vigilance inquiry into the Pre-employment Medical Examination Report, related documents, and statements of the medical personnel involved revealed several procedural ...
