Do not brood constantly over your defects or negative tendencies. It is sufficient that you calmly introspect and become aware of them. Do not wage war against your weaknesses, for direct confrontation often strengthens them. Do not repeatedly lament, “I have so many faults and shortcomings.”
Instead, consciously cultivate sattvic virtues—purity, patience, compassion, self-control, truthfulness, and serenity. Through steady meditation and the deliberate practice of positive qualities—especially by applying pratipaksha bhavana (the cultivation of the opposite noble thought)—the negative tendencies will gradually wither away on their own. This is the wise and effective path.
Swami Sivananda
In essence:
- Do not fight darkness.
- Light the lamp.
- Transformation is not achieved by harsh self-criticism, but by steady inner cultivation. This gentle yet disciplined method is both psychologically sound and spiritually profound.
