“How much you have studied is not the question; how much you have moved towards it, is what matters.”
Swami Chinmayananda
Study vs. Movement
In Vedฤnta, one may become highly proficient:Well-versed in the Upanishads, Fluent in quoting the Bhagavad Gita,Skilled in explaining Advaita.
But Vedฤnta does not measure growth by scholarship. It measures it by freedom from delusion.
Krishna says:
When the intellect crosses the mire of delusion, even what has been heard loses importance.
The emphasis is not on how much is heard, but on whether delusion has reduced.
That reduction is “movement.”
Proficiency vs. Efficiency
Proficiency belongs to the intellect (buddhi).
Efficiency belongs to the integrated personality.
Krishna defines Yoga as:
“Yoga is efficiency in action.”
Efficiency here does not mean speed or productivity. It means:Acting without agitation,Responding and deciding without ego-pressure, without emotional turbulence.
When knowledge functions in life without friction, it becomes efficiency.
How Proficiency Becomes Efficiency
1. Through Reflection (Manana)
Knowledge must be questioned internally:
- Has my fear reduced?
- Has my reactivity lessened?
Without this, learning remains decorative.
2. Through Assimilation (Nididhyฤsana)
Repeated contemplation dissolves habitual identification.
If I understand “I am not the doer,” anxiety about results must decline.
If it does not, knowledge has not matured.
(3) Through Ego-Reduction
The Vivekachudamani warns:
Scholarship may entertain; it does not liberate.
When knowledge strengthens humility instead of pride, proficiency begins transforming into efficiency.
4. The Real Measure of Movement
Movement toward Vedฤnta means:
- Less reaction, more composure
- Less doership, more witnesshood
- Less dependence on outcomes
- Greater equanimity in praise and blame
Proficiency says:
“I understand the teaching.”
Efficiency says:
“The teaching governs my responses.”
- Proficiency fills the head.
- Movement purifies the heart.
- Efficiency transforms life.
In true Vedantic growth, knowledge must travel: From ears → intellect → contemplation → conduct → being.
When it begins to express itself spontaneously in calmness, clarity, and inner freedom — then study has turned into movement, and proficiency has matured into efficiency.
That maturation is spiritual progress.
