“เคธ्เคตाเคง्เคฏाเคฏाเคจ्เคฎा เคช्เคฐเคฎเคฆः” occurs in the the Taittiriya Upanishad :
เคธ्เคตाเคง्เคฏाเคฏाเคค् (svฤdhyฤyฤt) — from self-study (study of the Veda; reflection upon Truth)
เคฎा (mฤ) — do not
เคช्เคฐเคฎเคฆः (pramadaแธฅ) — be negligent, careless, indifferent.
Do not neglect self-study.After honoring your teacher appropriately, continue the lineage and social order.Never neglect truth.Never neglect righteousness.
These are lifelong disciplines given at the time of graduation — forming the ethical and spiritual foundation of Vedic life.
What is “เคธ्เคตाเคง्เคฏाเคฏ” (Svฤdhyฤya)?
The word has deep meanings:
- Vedic Recitation – Regular chanting and preservation of sacred knowledge.
- Scriptural Study – Study of Upanishads, Gฤซtฤ, Brahma-sลซtra, etc.
- Self-Reflection – Contemplation on the Self (ฤtman).
- Introspective Inquiry – Examination of one’s thoughts, motives, and conduct.
Thus, svฤdhyฤya is both study of scripture and study of oneself
This injunction is given during the convocation address to departing students, the teacher warns:
Worldly life may distract you —But never abandon the pursuit of Truth.
Why?
Because:
- Without continuous reflection, knowledge becomes mechanical.
- Without study, discrimination (เคตिเคตेเค) weakens.
- Without introspection, ego quietly returns.
In Vedantic terms:
Knowledge must remain ever-fresh.
The spirit of this command echoes in the Bhagavad Gita:
“Constancy in self-knowledge and perception of Truth.”
Here too, nityatvam (constancy) is emphasized.
Practical Implications for a Householder
For a gแนhastha, it means:
- Daily reading of sacred texts
- Reflection on one’s conduct
- Aligning actions with Dharma
- Revisiting core spiritual truths regularly
- Without svฤdhyฤya, life becomes outward-moving only.
With svฤdhyฤya, life becomes inwardly illumined.
Ultimately, svฤdhyฤya culminates in:
“Who am I?”
When study becomes contemplation, and contemplation becomes abidance —then svฤdhyฤya transforms into nididhyฤsana (deep assimilation).
Neglect of svฤdhyฤya is neglect of one’s own highest possibility.
Never allow the flame of self-inquiry to fade.
