"Your divine destiny is to conquer sorrow, pain and suffering and to ascend to a state of perfect bliss. Mind is the instrument that enables you to overcome all that stands between you and your divine destiny.”
Swami Chidananda
I. “Your divine destiny…”
In Vedฤnta, the word destiny does not imply something to be newly attained. It indicates your true nature (svarลซpa).
The Upanishads declare:
เคธเคค्เคฏं เค्เคाเคจเคฎเคจเคจ्เคคं เคฌ्เคฐเคน्เคฎ ।
เค เคนं เคฌ्เคฐเคน्เคฎाเคธ्เคฎि ।
Thus, your “divine destiny” is not future attainment — it is recognition of what you already are: ฤnanda-svarลซpa.
II. “To conquer sorrow, pain and suffering”
In Advaita, sorrow (ลoka) arises from avidyฤ — ignorance of one's true nature.
The Bhagavad Gita says:
เค เคถोเค्เคฏाเคจเคจ्เคตเคถोเคเคธ्เคค्เคตं เคช्เคฐเค्เคाเคตाเคฆांเคถ्เค เคญाเคทเคธे ।
You grieve for what is not worthy of grief.
Why?
Because identification with body-mind produces:
- Birth and death anxiety
- Fear of loss
- Attachment and aversion
Sorrow is not an intrinsic property of the Self. It belongs to the mind under ignorance.
Thus, “conquering sorrow” means removal of wrong identification.
III. “To ascend to a state of perfect bliss”
Vedฤnta would refine this expression.
Bliss is not a state to ascend to.
The Self is described as:
เคเคจเคจ्เคฆो เคฌ्เคฐเคน्เคฎेเคคि เคต्เคฏเคाเคจाเคค् ।
Bliss is your nature. But it is covered by mental agitation.
Thus, “ascending” means:
From identification with the finite
To recognition of the infinite
It is not spatial movement — it is cognitive correction.
IV. “Mind is the instrument…”
Here lies the crucial Vedantic insight.
Mind (antaแธฅkaraแนa) is:
The locus of ignorance
And the means of liberation
The same mind that binds can liberate.
Bhagavatgita says,
The mind is friend; the mind is enemy.
V. How the Mind Functions in Liberation
In Advaita, liberation occurs through:
ลravaแนa – listening to truth
Manana – removal of doubts
Nididhyฤsana – assimilation
All three operate in the mind.
A purified mind becomes:
- Subtle
- Steady
- Reflective like a polished mirror
When the mind becomes silent and sattvic, it reveals the Self that was always present.
Just as clean water reflects the sun clearly.
VI. The Vedantic Paradox
The mind cannot “produce” bliss.
It can only remove ignorance.
The Self shines by itself.
When clouds move, the sun does not become brighter — it was always shining.
Similarly, when ignorance departs, bliss is not created — it is revealed.
VII. Final Vedantic Deciphering
Swami Chidananda’s statement, interpreted Advaitically, means:
- Your true nature is infinite bliss.
- Sorrow arises from ignorance.
- The disciplined mind removes ignorance.
- Liberation is recognition, not transformation.
Thus:
- You do not become divine.
- You discover that you were never other than Divine.
