Swami Sivananda
1. “You are a musk-deer that roams fast to enjoy the fragrance of the musk.”
In Vedฤnta, the musk-deer symbolizes the jฤซva in ignorance. The fragrance it seeks is ฤnanda, Sat, Cit—the very nature of the Self (ฤtman).
Yet the deer does not know that the musk is within itself.
Man seeks happiness, peace, and fulfillment in objects, relations, achievements, and experiences (viแนฃaya-sukha), not realizing that the source of joy is the Self alone (ฤtma-ฤnanda).
This echoes:
“All is dear only for the sake of the Self.”
2. “You are befooled by the notion that the Eternal Being is away from you.”
This is the crux of avidyฤ: the belief that Brahman is distant—reachable only through pilgrimage, future attainment, or divine favor.
Brahman is not an object to be reached (prฤpya), but the very subject (draแนฃแนญฤ).
The Self is ever-attained (nitya-prฤpta), not newly gained.
As Advaita declares:
3. “Close the door of the intellect, shut the windows of the senses…”
This is not anti-intellectualism but transcendence of discursive thought.
Door of the intellect: cessation of vikalpa (conceptual proliferation)
Windows of the senses: withdrawal from sense-object dependence (pratyฤhฤra)
The intellect (buddhi) is essential for discrimination (viveka), but realization dawns when even the subtlest concepts dissolve.
“When the senses and mind are stilled, that is the highest state.”
4. “…retire into the chamber of your heart”
The hแนdaya in Vedฤnta is not the emotional heart, but the Seat of Consciousness, the inner cave (guha).
Dahara-ฤkฤลa: the inner space where Brahman is intuited
Not movement in space, but abidance in Being
“Entered into the cave of the heart, the Supreme shines.”
5. “Enjoy the sleepless sleep of Nirvana.”
A profound paradox.
Sleep: absence of ego, mind, individuality
Sleepless: full awareness, not unconsciousness
Turฤซya — beyond waking, dream, and deep sleep
Pure Awareness without thought, without ignorance
ลaแน kara describes this as:
เคจिเคฆ्เคฐाเคฏाเคฎिเคต เคाเค्เคฐเคคि — “Awake even in sleep”
This is Jฤซvanmukti: living liberation.
6. “May Lord bless you.”
In Advaita, ฤชลvara’s grace (anugraha) is not external reward, but:
- the ripening of sฤdhana
- clarity of understanding
- readiness for Self-recognition
Grace culminates in Self-knowledge, where seeker and sought dissolve into one.
Essence:
- You are not a seeker of Brahman—you are Brahman.
- The search outward is born of ignorance.
- Withdrawal is not escape but return.
- Silence is not emptiness but fullness.
- Nirvฤแนa is not annihilation but wakeful infinity.
The musk is within. The roaming ends when recognition dawns.
