We contemplate the seventh mantra of the Mฤแนแธลซkya Upaniแนฃad—the heart of Advaita Vedฤnta—where the Supreme Self (Turฤซya) is revealed not by description, but by negation.
The Upaniแนฃad has already unfolded the three pฤdas—
- Vaiลvฤnara (waking),
- Hiraแนyagarbha (dream),
- ฤชลvara (deep sleep).
Now the Upaniแนฃad reveals Turฤซya, the Paramฤrtha-svarลซpa, the absolute Reality—not as another state, but as the substratum of all states.
Why the Language of Negation?
ลaแน karฤcฤrya explains:
Turฤซya cannot be defined positively.Words, concepts, categories, actions, and qualities cannot reach It.
Therefore the Upaniแนฃad uses "neti-neti" ( not this-not this) — not to point to nothingness, but to remove false superimpositions.
The Upaniแนฃads do not define the ฤtman; they indicate It.
Is Turฤซya ลลซnya (Nothing)?
A natural doubt arises:“If everything is negated, does nothing remain?”
ลaแน kara answers emphatically: No.
Negation removes only the false, not the Real.
Just as:
- a snake is falsely seen on a rope,
- silver is imagined in a shell,
- a man is mistaken in a tree stump,
- water is projected in a mirage—
- the error never exists without a substratum.
When the false notion is negated, the substratum shines by itself.
Similarly:
- The knower (ahaแน kartฤ) is falsely assumed.
- The known world is falsely objectified.
- When both are negated, Turฤซya—the substratum of both—reveals itself.
Why Can’t Turฤซya Be Positively Described?
ลaแน kara clarifies:
- No qualities (nirguแนa) — nothing to describe
- No activities (niแนฃkriya) — nothing to infer
- No categories — nothing to compare
- No instruments — nothing to observe
- No upฤdhis — nothing to limit
Unlike a cow (described by color, form, action), Turฤซya has no differentiating features.
Thus, positive language fails. Only negation of error succeeds.Negation Is Not Analysis of Error. The Upaniแนฃad does not analyze the false.
When someone mistakes a rope for a snake, a wise person does not ask:
- What color is the snake?
- Is it poisonous?
- He simply says:“This is not a snake.”
Likewise, the Upaniแนฃad negates:
- knowerhood,
- doership,
- enjoyership,
- objecthood,
- worldhood.
Nothing more is required.
Is This Knowledge Useless?
Another doubt:
“If Turฤซya cannot be used or grasped, is this pursuit meaningless—like the horn of a hare?”
ลaแน kara answers: This knowledge alone destroys saแนsฤra.
False notions give rise to:
kฤma,krodha,lobha,moha,mada,mฤtsarya,fear, sorrow, insecurity, bondage.
Just as knowing “this is only a shell” ends the desire for silver,
knowing “I am Turฤซya” ends all suffering born of ignorance.
The knower of the Self rejoices alone.
- Turฤซya Is Not Known — It Is Being
- The Self is not an object to be known.
- It is that by which knowing happens.
As Bhagavฤn Ramana says in Upadeลa Sฤra:
When the false “I” is destroyed by enquiry, the Self shines by itself.
Dream Analogy: Knower and Known Are Both False.
In dream: the seer and the seen, the mountain and the observer are both projections of the same mind.
On waking: both dissolve,neither remains.
Similarly: the waking knower and waking world are appearances upon Turฤซya Consciousness.
Negate the appearances—the Reality remains.
Meaning of the Mantra (Structure):
Six negations negate the knower
Six negations negate the known
One final indication remains:
The essence of the one, non-dual Self
Dissolution of the world of multiplicity
Peaceful, auspicious, non-dual
This supportless Reality is the only true support.
Conclusion:
Turฤซya is:
- not an experience,
- not a state,
- not an object,
- not a concept,
- but your very Self.
The Upaniแนฃad removes ignorance.
What remains does not need revelation—it reveals itself.
- This is the vision of all Upaniแนฃads.
- This is the freedom from saแนsฤra.
- This is Turฤซya.
