Daivฤซ & ฤ€surฤซ Sampatti: The Two Dispositions Within Us

The Bhagavad Gฤซtฤ categorizes human nature into two broad, contrasting dispositions or temperaments:

เคฆ्เคตौ เคญूเคคเคธเคฐ्เค—ौ เคฒोเค•ेเคฝเคธ्เคฎिเคจ् เคฆैเคต เค†เคธुเคฐ เคเคต เคš ॥

“In this world arise two dispositions: the divine and the demonic.”

This is not a division of communities but of inner character. Every heart contains both possibilities. Spiritual life is the art of strengthening the daivฤซ and dissolving the ฤsurฤซ.

ลšreyas vs Preyas: The Upanishadic Key

The Kaแนญhopaniแนฃad offers the clearest parallel:

เคถ्เคฐेเคฏเคถ्เคš เคช्เคฐेเคฏเคถ्เคš เคฎเคจुเคท्เคฏเคฎेเคคः… เคงीเคฐः เคถ्เคฐेเคฏोเคฝเคญि เคช्เคฐेเคฏเคธो เคตृเคฃीเคคे ॥

Daivฤซ sampatti = ลšreyas (the higher good)

ฤ€surฤซ sampatti = Preyas (the tempting pleasant)

The battle is always within.

Daivฤซ Sampatti

Fearlessness, purity, self-mastery, charity, truthfulness, ahimsa, serenity, compassion, humility, forgiveness.

ฤ€surฤซ Sampatti

Hypocrisy, arrogance, anger, harshness, greed, denial of Dharma, endless desire.

“Divine qualities lead to liberation; demonic tendencies to bondage.”

ลšaแน…kara’s Insight: Viveka Decides Everything

Without viveka, the mind cannot turn towards the divine:

เคจ เคนि เคถुเคฆ्เคง्เคฏเคคि เคšिเคค्เคคं เคคु เคตिเคตेเค•ाเคฆ्เคฏैเคฐ्เคตिเคจा เค•्เคตเคšिเคค् ॥

Thus, the real choice is between viveka and aviveka, clarity and confusion.

The Inner Kurukแนฃetra

Truth over convenience → ล›reyas

Generosity over greed → daiv

Patience over anger → daiv

Ego over humility → ฤsurฤซ

The true war is within our own dispositions.

Modern Relevance

In a world of noise and excess, the pull of preyas is powerful.

Yet daivฤซ sampatti remains ever available—simplicity, compassion, integrity, reflection.

The Call to Awaken

This is what Lord Yamaraj and Swami Vivekananda eschewed for the whole of humanity:

เค‰เคค्เคคिเคท्เค เคค เคœाเค—्เคฐเคค เคช्เคฐाเคช्เคฏ เคตเคฐाเคจ्เคจिเคฌोเคงเคค......

“Arise! Awake! Approach the great ones and realize the Truth.”

A timeless summons to rise above the ฤsurฤซ, choose ล›reyas, and awaken the divine potential within.

“Do not grieve. You are born with divine qualities.”

When Integrity Takes a Back Seat: Leadership Fails. There was no operational need, no functional gap, yet the process moved with astonishing velocity and precision. What followed exposes not just procedural negligence, but a deeper ethical breakdown in leadership. The Incident — Step by Step 1. Unjustified Requirement:   Despite ample mobility resources, the CEO insisted on adding another car to his fleet. 2. Questionable Procurement Process:   The vehicle was leased through a single tender nomination.  On the same day:  STE was issued,  Offer was received,  Technical recommendation was finalized.  Within 48 hours, purchase/Contract order was placed — an efficiency seen only when ...

It is a brief but precious moment in the vast expanse of existence, meant for awakening to the truth of pure consciousness. Yet, the very instruments intended to illuminate this truth—the mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), and inner awareness (antahkarana)—are delicate and prone to distortion. Classical Indian philosophy identifies four fundamental defects that cloud understanding and perpetuate bondage: Bhrama (Delusion), Pramada (Heedlessness), Vipralipsa (Deceit), and Karnapaแนญava (Inattention in Hearing). These are not mere abstract concepts; they are living tendencies that shape perception, judgment, and moral orientation. To recognize and remove them is to polish the mirror of the mind, allowing it to reflect the effulgence of the Self (Atman). The...

Pre-employment medical examinations are a vital safeguard in technically demanding industrial environments, ensuring that only medically fit candidates are inducted. These examinations are governed by detailed procedures designed to uphold transparency, accuracy, and professional integrity. Any deviation from these standards not only compromises the legitimacy of the recruitment process but also exposes the system to allegations of malpractice and weakens public trust. This case study concerns a complaint lodged by a selected candidate for the post of Operator-cum-Technician (OCT) in an integrated steel plant. The candidate alleged that he was declared “temporarily unfit” during the pre-employment medical examination because he refused to pay a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, demanded by the examining doctors. A vigilance inquiry into the Pre-employment Medical Examination Report, related documents, and statements of the medical personnel involved revealed several procedural ...
