Nฤrada’s Journey and the Lord’s Question

After completing his travels across the worlds, Sage Nฤrada reached Vaikuแน‡แนญha to pay homage to Lord Viแนฃแน‡u. The Lord, smiling graciously, asked,

“O Nฤrada, you have roamed the earth and seen the ways of men. Tell Me, what struck you most about human behavior?”

Nฤrada’s Reply: The Human Contradiction

Bowing before the Lord, Nฤrada said:

*เคงเคฐ्เคฎเคธ्เคฏ เคซเคฒं เค‡เคš्เค›เคจ्เคคि เคงเคฐ्เคฎं เคจैเคš्เค›เคจ्เคคि เคฎाเคจเคตाः । เคซเคฒं เคชाเคชเคธ्เคฏ เคจैเคš्เค›เคจ्เคคि เคชाเคชं เค•ुเคฐ्เคตเคจ्เคคि เคœเคจ्เคคเคตः ॥*

“Men desire the fruits of righteousness, yet they do not wish to live righteously.

They do not want the results of sin, yet they continue to commit sinful acts.”

This verse reveals the paradox of human nature — the longing for joy without effort, peace without purity, and heaven without self-discipline.

Viแนฃแน‡u’s Smile and His Insight

Lord Viแนฃแน‡u smiled gently and said,

“What you say, O Nฤrada, is indeed true. Such is the deluding power of Mฤyฤ.

Knowing what is right, man often does what is wrong;

desiring happiness, he follows the very path that leads to sorrow.”

He quoted from the Kaแนญhopaniแนฃad:

*เคถ्เคฐेเคฏเคถ्เคš เคช्เคฐेเคฏเคถ्เคš เคฎเคจुเคท्เคฏเคฎेเคคः เคคौ เคธเคฎ्เคชเคฐीเคค्เคฏ เคตिเคตिเคจเค•्เคคि เคงीเคฐः ।*

“The good and the pleasant both approach man;

the wise choose the good, while the ignorant pursue the pleasant.”

The Law of Cause and Effect

Viแนฃแน‡u continued,

“Happiness arises only from righteous living.

When greed and delusion govern action, suffering follows.

When compassion and truth guide behavior, joy is born naturally.

The law of karma is impartial — each reaps exactly what he sows.

Yet man, blinded by desire, wishes to harvest without sowing and to receive without giving.”

Nฤrada’s Question and the Lord’s Compassion

Nฤrada asked, “Bhagavฤn, if humans are so bound by ignorance, how may they be freed?”

Lord Viแนฃแน‡u replied,

“Through knowledge (jรฑฤna) and devotion (bhakti).

When man realizes that I dwell in all hearts and that every action bears fruit by My law,

he begins to act selflessly, offering all to Me.”

He then revealed His eternal principle from the Bhagavad Gฤซtฤ (4.11):

*เคฏे เคฏเคฅा เคฎां เคช्เคฐเคชเคฆ्เคฏเคจ्เคคे เคคांเคธ्เคคเคฅैเคต เคญเคœाเคฎ्เคฏเคนเคฎ् । เคฎเคฎ เคตเคฐ्เคค्เคฎाเคจुเคตเคฐ्เคคเคจ्เคคे เคฎเคจुเคท्เคฏाः เคชाเคฐ्เคฅ เคธเคฐ्เคตเคถः ॥*

“In whatever way beings approach Me, I respond to them in the same manner;

for all men, O Arjuna, follow My path in every way.”

The Lord’s Assurance

“Tell mankind,” said Viแนฃแน‡u, “that I respond not to outer rituals but to the sincerity of the heart.

Let them act righteously out of love for Me, not for reward —

then the fruits of dharma will follow naturally.

When bhakti purifies the heart, dharma becomes effortless,

and the desire for fruits dissolves into blissful surrender.”

He affirmed His promise from the Gฤซtฤ (9.22):

*เค…เคจเคจ्เคฏाเคถ्เคšिเคจ्เคคเคฏเคจ्เคคो เคฎां เคฏे เคœเคจाः เคชเคฐ्เคฏुเคชाเคธเคคे । เคคेเคทां เคจिเคค्เคฏाเคญिเคฏुเค•्เคคाเคจां เคฏोเค—เค•्เคทेเคฎं เคตเคนाเคฎ्เคฏเคนเคฎ् ॥*

“To those who worship Me with single-minded devotion,

I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.”

Nฤrada’s Realization

Moved by the Lord’s grace, Nฤrada bowed and said, “Indeed, O Nฤrฤyaแน‡a, only by Your compassion can man rise above delusion.

The remembrance of Your name itself is the surest path to peace.”

Then, with his vฤซแน‡ฤ in hand, he sang as he departed from Vaikuแน‡แนญha:

“The Lord responds to each as they approach Him. When man lives in dharma for His sake, both the path and the fruit are fulfilled within.”

The Eternal Lesson

The dialogue between Viแนฃแน‡u and Nฤrada reflects the human condition and divine mercy:

*Man desires the fruits of dharma without practicing dharma,*

*fears the fruits of pฤpa yet indulges in pฤpa,*

*but the Lord, out of infinite compassion, mirrors each soul’s sincerity.*

As Krishna declares,

*The Divine meets each being where they stand — guiding, uplifting, and leading them gently toward the light of Truth.*

It is a brief but precious moment in the vast expanse of existence, meant for awakening to the truth of pure consciousness. Yet, the very instruments intended to illuminate this truth—the mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), and inner awareness (antahkarana)—are delicate and prone to distortion. Classical Indian philosophy identifies four fundamental defects that cloud understanding and perpetuate bondage: Bhrama (Delusion), Pramada (Heedlessness), Vipralipsa (Deceit), and Karnapaแนญava (Inattention in Hearing). These are not mere abstract concepts; they are living tendencies that shape perception, judgment, and moral orientation. To recognize and remove them is to polish the mirror of the mind, allowing it to reflect the effulgence of the Self (Atman). The...

These examinations are governed by detailed procedures designed to uphold transparency, accuracy, and professional integrity. Any deviation from these standards not only compromises the legitimacy of the recruitment process but also exposes the system to allegations of malpractice and weakens public trust. This case study concerns a complaint lodged by a selected candidate for the post of Operator-cum-Technician (OCT) in an integrated steel plant. The candidate alleged that he was declared “temporarily unfit” during the pre-employment medical examination because he refused to pay a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, demanded by the examining doctors. A vigilance inquiry into the Pre-employment Medical Examination Report, related documents, and statements of the medical personnel involved revealed several procedural ...
