Every person is born with five sacred debts (pancha rina).
Deva rina: We are indebted to the gods and cosmic forces — the sun, rain, air, and fire — that sustain our life. This is repaid through gratitude, reverence, and by living in tune with nature without polluting or misusing its gifts.
Pitru rina: We owe a debt to our parents and ancestors who gave us life and culture. This is repaid by respecting and serving them, performing our duties, and living righteously so the family lineage is honored.
Rishi rina: We are indebted to the sages and teachers who gave us the Vedas and timeless wisdom. This is repaid by studying the scriptures, honoring the Guru, practicing and sharing knowledge, and engaging in svadhyaya (self-study and reflection).
Bhuta rina: We owe a debt to all beings — animals, trees, and nature(sub human species) — that support our existence. This is repaid by compassion, non-violence, feeding and protecting creatures, conserving resources, and living responsibly.
Nri rina: We are indebted to society and fellow humans, whose labor and cooperation make our lives possible. People are toiling day and night to make our life comfortable. This is repaid by honesty, charity, service, justice, fulfilling one’s duties with sincerity, and working for the welfare of all.
In essence, the five debts remind us that life is not for selfish enjoyment alone, but to live with gratitude, fulfill our responsibilities, and serve the divine, our ancestors, our teachers, all beings, and society.
