𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗸𝗶 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮

उल्टा नाम जपा जग जाना । वाल्मीकि भए ब्रह्म समाना ॥“

The whole world knows that by chanting the Lord’s Name in reverse,

Vālmīki became one with Brahman.”

Once a hunter and robber named Ratnākara, Vālmīki’s life was steeped in ignorance and violence. Encountering Sage Nārada, he was instructed to chant Rāma, but could not utter it. Out of compassion, Nārada taught him “मरा, मरा ” — symbolizing the death of sin. Continuous repetition transformed it into “Rāma, Rāma,” purifying his heart until realization dawned.The episode shows that the Name’s power lies in sincerity, not perfection, leading the darkest heart to light.

*उमा कहउँ में अनुभव अपना । एक हरि नाम जगत सब सपना ॥*

“O Umā, from my own experience I declare 

One Name of Hari alone is real; the whole world is a dream.”

Lord Śiva affirms to Pārvatī that all worldly experiences are fleeting, like dreams. The Divine Name alone reveals the eternal Paramātman. As waking dissolves dream, nāma-smaraṇa lifts the seeker beyond māyā to the one unchanging Self.

The Glory of  Nāma-Māhātmya

Tulsidas proclaims:

The Name purifies the most impure heart.It transcends sin, ignorance, and form.It unites the devotee with the Lord.The Divine Name is the bridge between finite and Infinite.

Affirmation in the Bhagavad Gītā 9.30–31

*अपि चेत् सुदुराचारो भजते मामनन्यभाक् ।साधुरेव स मन्तव्यः सम्यग्व्यवसितो हि सः ॥ क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति ।कौन्तेय प्रतिजानीहि न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति ॥*

Even the most wicked, if devoted exclusively to Me, is to be considered righteous, for his resolve is true. Soon he becomes virtuous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kuntī, know that My devotee never perishes.This mirrors Vālmīki’s redemption — the heart’s orientation toward God is more decisive than past actions.

The Advaitic Insight

Advaita Vedānta sees the Divine Name as Śabda-Brahman, the sound-form of the Absolute. Devotional repetition stills the mind, and sound dissolves into silence revealing Nāma, Nāmī, and Nāmakārī as one — pure Consciousness.

Conclusion

Lord Śiva’s words — *“एक हरि नाम जगत सब सपना”* — unite Bhakti and Vedānta, affirming the Name as the living presence of the Infinite. Through devoted remembrance, the Name, the Chanter, and the Lord merge in blissful Awareness.

*राम नाम बड़ धन्य बखान्या । सुनि अमर होहिं नाम गुण गान्या ॥*

Blessed is the Name of Rāma; by hearing and singing its glory, one attains immortality.
